Who we are
It is believed that First Baptist Church was established in Medicine Hat around 1890 and was originally located on Maple Avenue SE in the Flats. Then in 1965 the congregation relocated to a new building on Stewart Avenue NW in Crescent Heights and the name was changed from First Baptist Church to Heights Baptist Church to reflect the new location.
Afterwards In 2003 Heights Baptist Church purchased and moved into the former St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church building on Division Avenue South to accommodate growth that the congregation was experiencing at that time. The name of the church remains Heights even though it is located on the Southwest Hill.
Throughout most of its history Heights Baptist Church was affiliated with the Baptist Union of Western Canada which later became the Canadian Baptists of Western Canada. In 2023 the membership of the church made the decision to end their log time affiliation with the Canadian Baptists of Western Canada. The congregation is currently independent and not affiliated with any denomination.
Relationships, family, and community are important themes and values at Heights Baptist Church. Heights Baptist Church is not an event for people to attend, but rather a family to belong to. As well, Heights Baptist Church seeks to raise up courageous disciples of Jesus Christ who will stand firm to the end. Our ministry aims to inform and equip people to bring a Christian worldview to issues related to morality, culture, and politics in our world today.
